Malnutrition Awareness Week will take place from 10–14 November 2025. This important Europe-wide initiative is an opportunity to raise awareness of malnutrition in Ireland – a serious but often under-recognised issue affecting over 222,000 people with Ireland with an annual cost to the health service of €2.8 billion (Irish Society for Clinical Nutrition & Metabolism, 2024).
Anyone can develop malnutrition but in Ireland it usually occurs in people who are unwell. You may be more at risk if you are:
65 years or older
Living with a long-term health condition (for example, lung disease)
Living with cancer
Experiencing difficulties swallowing
Living alone
Malnutrition is preventable and treatable, yet it continues to impact clinical outcomes, increases length of stay, recovery times, and reduces quality of life.
To find out more:
INDI have produced the following resources in collaboration with the Irish Society for Clinical Nutrition and Metabolism (IRSPEN).
During Malnutrition Awareness Week, ESPEN brings together healthcare professionals and institutions worldwide to strengthen early detection, improve nutritional care, monitor quality, and drive action against malnutrition.

Home Artificial Nutrition Awareness (HAN) Week: 7-13 August 2023; a week dedicated to raising awareness about essential nutritional treatments; parenteral nutrition, enteral nutrition and oral supplements.
Make some noise on your socials, in your work place and amongst friends and family to share information about artificial feeding. Show feeding beyond the home; it may be a home therapy but it should not confine people!
Your mission this week is to:
Value:
Value yourself and the effort you put into your own care and treatment. If you care for or support someone on HAN, you should be equally valued.
The provision of home artificial nutrition (HAN) in the UK, our dedicated healthcare professionals and homecare services.
Value the contribution you make as a healthcare professional, service or product supplier; making a difference to those living on HAN.
Share:
If you receive HAN or care for and support someone who does; what’s your story, share it with people to educate them, not for sympathy but understanding.
Do you provide a product or service that supports people on HAN? Tell people what and why it’s important to those on HAN!
Are you a professional group who campaign or advocate for people on HAN? If so, share how and why you do this. You could encourage others to show an interest in artificial nutrition.
Where do you fit into the world of HAN? It’s an intricate treatment with many elements that make the whole system function; share this with others.
Engage:
Engage with family, friends and colleagues, directly or via social media platforms to spread the word that HAN is vital for thousands of people in the UK to sustain life via special medical nutrition being prescribed when the normal route of eating and drinking is compromised.
When you find the right opportunity, explain who you are, what you do and why. More people need to hear the balanced perspective of HAN, it’s not always plain sailing and despite common treatments the vast number of conditions people have and are treated for, bring a variety of situations which for some are challenging on a daily basis.
Be receptive to the pros and cons of HAN.
Lifesaving, life-changing home treatments! Similar treatments, for different reasons with varying impact on those receiving it and supporting people on it.
Daily activities will take place during the week – keep in touch via Facebook and Twitter: @PINNTcharity
Life-saving nutrition treatments received by people living at home in the community – not in a hospital.
Please note that this meeting is different to our Horizons in intestinal Failure, Rehabilitation and Home Parenteral nutrition course which this year will be held at the RCP in October 2023.

Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, substantial uncertainties, unfortunately, remain on safety and feasibility of many activities and events for several months ahead, both in Europe and worldwide. Travel limitations also will most likely remain substantial in the near future.
ESPEN has therefore taken the difficult decision to cancel our physical 2020 Congress, and at the same time, we have decided to put our best energy in organising a Virtual Congress. We wish to thank the Lyon teams who continue to collaborate with central ESPEN, and to reassure all of you that ESPEN is fully committed to creating a virtual event up to the highest standards of science, education and innovation.
We will use state-of-the-art technology to ensure fruitful exchanges, presentations of original findings and inclusion of up-to-date topics in a renewed programme. We believe that we need to meet virtually in this very difficult year, to continue to disseminate and strengthen our strong messages on the key role of nutritional care in all fields of patient care; and we need to discuss how clinical nutrition has to become an integral part of care also in the new challenges posed by COVID-19 patients.
We have been greatly encouraged by an outstanding number of abstract submissions at the regular submission deadline; under these difficult circumstances, it is extremely meaningful and appreciated. Please take advantage of the additional opportunity to submit abstracts during the late-breaking submission period, which has been extended to 30 June 2020, with no submission fees.
Let us all take the opportunity to network and learn from each other in the ESPEN 2020 Virtual Congress. We look forward to meeting you all in September!
Best regards

Professionally broadcasted from studios in Brussels, Madrid and Amsterdam, EU4Nutrition LIVE will bring together decision-makers, patient representatives and health care professionals. Together we aim to secure optimal nutritional care to be an integral part of future national and EU health policies and recommendations.
Break-out workshops
A. Including nutrition(al care) in health policies | Brussels
B. Implementing COVID-19 lessons learned | Madrid
C. Beating cancer with nutrition(al care) | Amsterdam
Background Malnutrition and undernutrition affect 33 million European citizens and places an unacceptable burden on European citizens and health care budgets. Ample scientific evidence shows that optimising nutrition and nutritional care is a very (cost-) effective measure in both disease prevention and treatment in cancer and COVID-19.
Nutritional Care and the EU The EU is actively working on the new EU4Health programme, the Farm to Fork strategy, EU’s Beating Cancer Plan and the EU health workforce plan. Together, these programmes provide an unprecedented opportunity to finally grand nutrition and nutritional care the important role it deserves and integrate optimal nutrition in prevention and care in the EU and its member states.
Organisers The event is co-organised by the European Nutrition for Health Alliance (ENHA) and its members and partners, among others the European Patients’ Forum (EPF) and the European Cancer Patient Coalition (ECPC) and European professional societies such as ESPEN (clinical nutrition & metabolism), EuGMS (geriatricians) and EFAD (dietitians)

Are you a patient or carer of someone receiving either home parenteral or enteral (tube feeding) nutrition living in Ireland?
If so, we want to hear from you.
Who we are:
The Irish Society for Clinical Nutrition and Metabolism (IrSPEN) is a non-profit, voluntary organisation of doctors, dietitians, nurses and other healthcare professionals dedicated to improving nutritional care of patients in Ireland.
Have Your Say
If you are a patient on nutrition support at home, or care for someone that is, please take just 5 minutes to complete our short survey, designed to find out more about the support needs of home nutrition patients around the country.
Why we ask
As many IrSPEN members are healthcare professionals who are involved with patients with complex nutritional needs, we want to know how we can help improve the support and information available to patients on long term enteral or parenteral nutrition at home.
Patient Support Meeting – Spring 2020
(due to Covid-19 this meeting is extended to Winter 2020)
In the UK, an organisation called Patients on Intravenous and Nasogastric Therapy (PINNT) provides support and an online forum for patients on home feeding, but in Ireland, no such patient organisation currently exists. With this in mind, IrSPEN, in conjunction with PINNT, is planning to organise a meeting for patients and carers in a central location in Dublin in late spring, where there will be an opportunity to hear from invited speakers on relevant topics and share experiences. Your responses to the survey will help us tailor the programme to meet expectations, while giving us a better idea of the support needs of patients around the country and the interest in having other events and support days.
How to complete the survey
To request a paper version of the survey please contact your home nutrition provider. At the end of the survey, you will be given the option of providing IrSPEN with your contact details so that we can send you further information and joining details for the Spring patient meeting. Your personal information will remain separate from the results of the survey to maintain anonymity and will not be used other than for the purposes stated.

There is sufficient meeting space within the venue to accommodate a wide range of smaller meetings and sessions, as well as nearby hotels, should any visiting societies wish to hold private meetings off-site.
Dublin is one of Europe’s great cities. It is presently one of the major cities for industry and sciences. Dublin’s reputation for hospitality and for ensuring a fabulous welcome is legendary. Its cultural pedigree is renowned from the famous Book of Kells in Trinity College, a vibrant traditional music scene, to the fact that it has been designated as a UNESCO City of Literature with a literary heritage stretching over hundreds of years. It is small enough to ensure that all conference events and accommodation will be just a short walk away while large enough to allow one to get lost wandering its museums, music venues, restaurants and, of course, traditional pubs.
We look forward to welcoming and meeting you in Dublin in 2019 for a truly memorable FENS European Nutrition Conference.

The theme of this SCOPE School is: What are the causes of obesity and what can we do about it?
13th June 2017, London, UK
The aim of this one day SCOPE School is to explore the putative factors that may cause obesity and to evaluate how a better understanding of the aetiology may improve treatment approaches.
Treatment for obesity is a priority, but is complicated by healthcare professionals often not understanding the aetiology of the disease they are trying to treat. Our inability to diagnose the various factors that may cause obesity and to provide targeted treatments often result in unsatisfactory outcomes. A better understanding of the multiple causes of obesity would improve the clinical approach of healthcare professionals.
These events are targeted at professionals working in clinical practice, including: nurses, nutritionists, physiotherapists and anybody who works directly with obese patients as well as students training in the area of obesity.
Attendees of this event will earn 4 SCOPE points and 16 CPD points (pending)

European Obesity Day 2017 will be held on Saturday 20 May. It brings together healthcare, patient and political communities who are keen to raise awareness of obesity and the many other diseases on which it impacts. The theme for EOD 2017 is Tackling Obesity Together.
The aim is to increase knowledge and understanding of the need for action at both European and national levels to improve prevention, treatment and care. At the same time, the campaign supports European citizens who are overweight or have obesity to make lifestyle changes to manage their weight and improve their overall health and quality of life.
Although European Obesity Day is a recognised international awareness day, the activities and initiatives that take place around it are just as important. These include events held at local, national and international level held in the lead up to EOD and many which will continue afterwards, please see press release related to EOD 2016.
The story behind European Obesity Day
The first European Obesity Day (EOD) was held in May 2010. What started as a grass-roots campaign involving a small group of concerned doctors and patients, quickly turned into a major event with participants and activities across many European countries.
Events have ranged from picnics and information stands in Paris, to walks and fun runs; briefings for healthcare professionals and pharmacists; the free distribution of fresh fruit and vegetables; debates and workshops for politicians and policymakers; media briefings and press conferences; and the free use of city bikes for the day. A more detailed list of some of the activities appears here.
In 2010 EOD received the award for ‘Campaign of the Year’ at the European Public Affairs Awards.
The importance of European Obesity Day
European Obesity Day is an important opportunity to raise awareness about obesity.
For EOD 2017 we will be highlighting the need for obesity to be more widely recognised by the European Union and member state governments as a chronic disease and to draw attention to the benefits this will bring to both individuals and to healthcare systems. Obesity is recognised as a chronic disease that requires long-term management by health organisations such as WHO [1], The Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) [2], The American Medical Association (AMA) [3] and the Canadian Medical Association (CMA) [4].
Recognition of obesity as a chronic disease by European Member States will result in greater access to care and treatment for those who are overweight or who have obesity. [5] [6]
At the same time, the campaign supports the broader initiatives of EASO, and national associations and collaborating centres, to encourage European citizens who are overweight or who have obesity to make the necessary changes to manage their weight and improve their overall health and quality of life.
Established in 1986, EASO is a federation of professional membership associations from 32 European countries. It is the voice of the European obesity community, representing scientists, health care practitioners, physicians, public health experts and patients. EASO is in formal relations with the World Health Organisation (WHO) Regional Office for Europe and is a founding member of the EU Platform on Diet, Physical Activity and Health.
EASO promotes action through collaboration: in advocacy, communication, education and research. EASO facilitates and engages in actions that prevent and combat the epidemic of obesity. It contributes to high level European and National scientific consultations, hosts the annual European Congress on Obesity (ECO), has dynamic and active topic specific Task Forces and Working Groups, and coordinates obesity education across Europe. EASO’s mission is to reduce the burden of unhealthy weight.

Launch of BAPEN’s Malnutrition Self-Screening Tool
December 1st, 2015
The tool, developed by the Malnutrition Action Group of BAPEN, with input from PENG dietitians, is accessible on-line. It is designed to help patients and /or their carers identify their risk of malnutrition and give advice on action to take.
Based on ‘MUST’, the new Malnutrition Self-Screening Tool includes an easy-to-use calculator to identify risk of malnutrition, first line dietary advice to improve nutritional intake and encourages those at risk to seek further help and information from their GP or other healthcare professional including Dietitians. The BAPEN Self-Screening website also includes a page for healthcare professionals, with links to the Self-Screening calculator and the ‘Malnutrition pathway’ resources.
The launch of this Malnutrition Self-Screening Tool represents BAPEN’s commitment to improve nutritional care in the community, where most malnutrition develops and exists at a given point in time.
ROLES OF SLEEP AND CIRCADIAN RHYTHMS IN THE ORIGIN AND NUTRITIONAL MANAGEMENT OF OBESITY AND METABOLIC DISEASE CONFERENCE
8 – 9 December 2015
Royal Society of Medicine, 1 Wimpole Street, London W1G 0AE
Scientific Programme Organiser: Professor Bruce Griffin, University of Surrey A joint conference between the Nutrition Society and the Royal Society of Medicine.
Obesity-related disease underlies hundreds of thousands of premature deaths worldwide. Obesity originates from an imbalance in the intake and expenditure of energy, and specifically from the passive over consumption of energy from food and a sedentary lifestyle, which leads to an increased storage of body fat and weight gain. There is an emerging body of evidence to suggest that partial sleep deprivation may contribute to the development of obesity by influencing both the amount and type of food that we eat, through effects on appetite and food choice. There is also compelling evidence to suggest that obesity may develop from a mismatch between the timing of food intake throughout the day, and circadian rhythms associated with the regulation of energy balance.

Malnutrition is preventable and treatable, yet it continues to impact clinical outcomes, increases length of stay, recovery times, and reduces quality of life.

LIVE ESPEN VIRTUAL CONGRESS – SEPTEMBER 19-21 2020
ESPEN 2020 IS NOW A FULLY VIRTUAL CONGRESS
Dear ESPEN community,
Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, substantial uncertainties, unfortunately, remain on safety and feasibility of many activities and events for several months ahead, both in Europe and worldwide.
EU4Nutrition LIVE – Thursday October 1st, 2020: Nutrition, Cancer & COVID
Professionally broadcasted from studios in Brussels, Madrid and Amsterdam, EU4Nutrition LIVE will bring together decision-makers, patient representatives and health care professionals. Together we aim to secure optimal nutritional care to be an integral part of future national and EU health policies and recommendations.
Break-out workshops
Background
Malnutrition and undernutrition affect 33 million European citizens and places an unacceptable burden on European citizens and health care budgets. Ample scientific evidence shows that optimising nutrition and nutritional care is a very (cost-) effective measure in both disease prevention and treatment in cancer and COVID-19.
Nutritional Care and the EU
The EU is actively working on the new EU4Health programme, the Farm to Fork strategy, EU’s Beating Cancer Plan and the EU health workforce plan. Together, these programmes provide an unprecedented opportunity to finally grand nutrition and nutritional care the important role it deserves and integrate optimal nutrition in prevention and care in the EU and its member states.
Organisers
The event is co-organised by the European Nutrition for Health Alliance (ENHA) and its members and partners, among others the European Patients’ Forum (EPF) and the European Cancer Patient Coalition (ECPC) and European professional societies such as ESPEN (clinical nutrition & metabolism), EuGMS (geriatricians) and EFAD (dietitians)

IrSPEN National Survey of Patients on Nutrition Support at home in Ireland

13th European Nutrition Conference
Federation of European Nutrition Societies (FENS) 2019
15 – 18 October 2019 in the
Convention Centre Dublin, Ireland
Welcome,
The Nutrition Society in cooperation with The Nutrition Society Irish Section are pleased, as hosts, to invite you to the 13th European Nutrition Conference, Federation of European Nutrition Societies (FENS) 2019 in Dublin, Ireland. The conference will take place from 15 – 18 October 2019 in the Convention Centre Dublin, Ireland in the heart of Dublin city.
The FENS European Nutrition Conference is held once every four years, and is the premier European meeting in its field.
The theme for the 2019 conference is “Malnutrition in an Obese World: European Perspectives”.
The scientific programme will feature the best international speakers, covering a wide programme of subject areas across the spectrum of nutritional science in plenary and parallel session formats. Both oral and poster presentation opportunities for submitted papers and invited speaker slots, will be included in the four-day programme. A range of other sessions, such as workshops sessions, special “Hot Topic” presentations, industrial symposia, panel debates, and satellite symposia or sessions hosted by related organisations and societies are welcome.

What are the causes of obesity and what can we do about it? – 13th June 2017, London, UK
SCOPE School London 2017

European Obesity Day – Saturday, May 20th, 2017
About European Obesity Day
European Obesity Day 2017 will be held on Saturday 20 May. It brings together healthcare, patient and political communities who are keen to raise awareness of obesity and the many other diseases on which it impacts. The theme for EOD 2017 is Tackling Obesity Together.
The aim
is to increase knowledge and understanding of the need for action at both European and national levels to improve prevention, treatment and care.
Who is behind European Obesity Day
European Obesity Day is a campaign platform of the European Association for the Study of Obesity (EASO).
More about EASO
It is enabled with the support of Medtronic and Novo Nordisk.

The Malnutrition Self-Screening Tool will be available via a new website: www.malnutritionselfscreening.org
ROLES OF SLEEP AND CIRCADIAN RHYTHMS IN THE ORIGIN AND NUTRITIONAL MANAGEMENT OF OBESITY AND METABOLIC DISEASE CONFERENCE
Scientific Programme Organiser: Professor Bruce Griffin, University of Surrey
A joint conference between the Nutrition Society and the Royal Society of Medicine.

A.S.P.E.N.’s Malnutrition Awareness Week™ September 28 – October 2, 2015
A.S.P.E.N. will be hosting the fourth annual Malnutrition Awareness Week™ this year. The purpose of Malnutrition Awareness Week™ is to raise awareness in healthcare professionals to consider assessing and intervening earlier and for the public to realize that they need to ask about their nutrition status and advocate for optimal nutrition care as much as possible. In 2014, A.S.P.E.N. received a Certificate of Special Recognition from United States Senator Benjamin Cardin of Maryland for Malnutrition Awareness Week™. This week is always packed full of educational programming and resource dissemination to help clinicians and the general public understand this often poorly diagnosed condition.
